Job Description
The incumbent in this position is responsible for all aspects of the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s strategic response to climate change through resiliency planning as a component of the Heritage and Environment Resources Office (HERO). A community-centered approach is the cornerstone of traditional decision-making in climate resiliency planning. The Climate Resiliency Officer works with the extant Seminole communities located in South and Central Florida to provide recommendations to Tribal leadership related to climate change impacts over Seminole communities and a long-range cohesive adaptation plan. While focused on the Tribes modern reservations in South Florida, the position also includes broader interaction with the ancestral lands of the Seminole People through the southeastern portion of North America. The Climate Resiliency Officer provides subject matter expertise and leadership to help inform long-range resilient strategies for the benefit of the Seminole Communities. The incumbent is expected to develop strong partnerships and coordination with external partners and agencies including Universities, Federal Agencies etc. Doctoral or Master’s degree in climatology with emphasis on climate change, Global Sustainability, meteorology, atmospheric science, Environmental Science or closely related subject is required. A minimum of five (5) years of experience working with Tribal, Federal, State, or local Governments in Climate Science is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. The incumbent must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Proficiency with Microsoft software packages (especially Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Explorer, and Power Point) and a willingness to learn GIS and document management software is required. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, to be able to explain complex climate change issues and resiliency processes to a wide range of audiences. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a multicultural interdisciplinary team. Must be able to travel across reservations and work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
