Job Description

This position entails advanced, professional scientific work with responsibilities in the monitoring, assessment, and management of forest and grassland resources on Seminole Tribe of Florida lands. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, and oversight of forest management plans and tribal regulations, ordinances, ensuring compliance with the Tribe’s Forest Management Plan, Forest Products Ordinance, and additional tribal resource management approved documents. The individual implements forest management plans, conducts ecological assessments, and oversees habitat restoration projects to contribute to the long-term monitoring and retreatment of tribal lands. The Forest /Ecologist exercises independent judgment in the application of the ecological scientific principles, methodologies, and practices of forest/grassland management. Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest conservation, ecology, biology, environmental science, natural resource management or related field from an accredited four-year college or university is required. A minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in ecology, botany, forest ecosystems, species identification, and ecological monitoring techniques, including prior supervisory experience is required. Prior experience working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is preferred. An equivalent combination of relevant education/ training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities will be considered. Knowledge of sustainable forestry practices, wildlife habitat conservation, and ecosystem restoration. Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver’s License is required. Ability to meet physical fitness standards, as set by the Tribe’s Wildland Fire Division, in order to obtain/retain basic Wildland Firefighter certification is required. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate excellent organizational, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills are required. Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office applications packages is required. Must be able to travel to all Seminole Tribe of Florida Reservations and Tribal Lands and must be able to work a flexible schedule that can include evenings, holidays, and weekends.
